Explanation of Balance

Balance is making a piece equally interesting, aesthetically pleasing or important, throughout the composition. This means that the elements of the page are arranged so that no element overpowers the entire piece.

Balance

There are three different kinds of balance:  Symmetrical, Asymmetrical, and Radial.
  • Symmetry (or formal balance) - Both sides of the composition, either side of the horizontal or vertical axis of the artwork, are similar, or exactly the same.
  • Asymmetry (or informal balance) - Both sides of the composition, either side of the horizontal or vertical axis of the artwork, are not the same.
  • Radial balance - The composition is arranged in spirals or circles.
