We never see Eva Smith (Daisy Renton) on stage in the play and we only have the evidence that The Inspector, the Birlings and Gerald Croft give us. Daisy Renton is a name that Eva assumes.
The Inspector claims that a girl called Eva Smith worked for Birling and was fired. Next she worked at Milwards, where she was also fired. Subsequently, she had relationships with Gerald Croft and then Eric Birling, by whom she became pregnant. Next, she turned to Mrs. Birling's charitable committee for help, but she committed suicide (by drinking disinfectant) two hours before the beginning of the play. Gerald Croft's suggested that there was more than one girl involved in the Inspector's story and it is possible that the story is not quite true and that she never existed as one person. |
